Today we are fortunate enough to have The Circle of Tivedon author Ryan Shorten here with us. Before we get to the interview, if you’re wondering what type of book it is, here’s the blurb from the back of the book. The Circle of Tivedon is a Middle Grade/YA fantasy fiction book.
Attending Tivedon should have been the most exciting time in Jayl’s young life. However, when inexplicable things begin to darken the hallowed halls of of the school and he’s accused of murder, Jayl finds himself thrust into a quest to save himself, his home, and ultimately all of Tiertyn itself.
Now, onto the interview.
1. Why did you write this book (as opposed to another)?
Having read Fantasy myself since I was quite young , this was the genre that I felt closest to when I began writing. My imagination, broadened by authors as Tolkien, Brooks, and Pratchett, laid the foundation from which I explored my own ideas. I had always enjoyed creative writing and although I can’t recall the exact moment when I decided to write a book (or trilogy in this case), the idea for this story grew over a considerable amount of time. In 2001, I started out with just a handful of pages and then set it aside for the better part of two years. This pattern of starts and stops continued for the next five years before I really got down to it. After that, I could see the story and characters becoming something. I began writing every day for nearly two more years until a draft that was ready for an editor took shape. Writing a book had always been a life goal and throughout the whole process, truly, that’s what kept me going.
