Hey guys, it’s Krista! I’m here a day early with a review of a great book, “Little Jimmy Says Same is Lame” and an interview of the author Jimmy Vee! “Same is Lame” focuses on an issue that we have all heard so much about in recent times- bullying and acceptance.
We’ve all been bullied. Everyone knows that bullying is a HUGE topic in schools today. It’s a big issue that every child and parent has to or will have to deal with. I know I was bullied in school. And now, I know that bullying is one of the major problems our children have to deal with in school. So how do we conquer bullying? “Little Jimmy Says Same is Lame” by Jimmy Vee is a great picture book meant to, not combat bullying, but to help kids deal with being bullied. It teaches children to accept themselves, no matter what other kids make fun of them for. It teaches an important lesson- accept yourself.
Overall, I like “Same is Lame.” The message, the illustrations, the writing- all aspects of the book came together to create a message told in a way that grabs and keeps the reader’s attention. Much like Dr. Seuss books, “Same is Lame” uses rhymes and rhythm to keep the book flowing. There are a couple of times where an odd word or phrase throws off the rhythm of the book, but overall it kept me interested and reading along.
I would probably give the book five out of five stars. The story is amazing, the illustrations are great, and the message it clearly sends to children is a very important one- accept yourself and love who you are.
A word from the author
Why did you write this book?
The concept for this book came as a result of a marketing seminar I give to entrepreneurs. In the seminar, I would tell my story about being five feet tall and how I have used it to my advantage in life and business. I then go on to share many business and marketing principles. After the seminar, I always get a flood of people coming up to me and telling how much they loved hearing my story and how they had this thing or that thing that they have never liked about themselves. Now they realize that they don’t have to be ashamed of it or hide from it anymore. They would all remark that they wished they had heard this message when they were younger. People said it so many times, I figured I share my story and this message to young people of today by writing a children’s book. So that’s what I did. Today the book and the foundation help children realize that being different is actually cool.
What advice would the main character, Jimmy, have for a child who is being made fun of?
I would say to them, “Same Is Lame.” People make fun of things that are different, that they don’t understand, make them uncomfortable or that they are jealous of. Be confident in who you are and what makes you unique. Wear it on your sleeve. Show them you’re proud to be who you are. Show them you are proud to be different. People respect people who are confident in the face of adversity.
Jimmy talks about accepting yourself- would he have any advice for someone who is bully?
Bully’s are just people who lack self-confidence and have to get it by picking on others they feel are less confident than they are. Confidence and pride is the key for any child who is being bullied and any bully that wants to reform.
What other children’s books have you written? Do you plan on writing any more?
I have co-authored several business books (both traditionally published and self-published). Little Jimmy Says, “Same Is Lame” is my first children’s book. I have two other children’s manuscripts that I have written that I am currently submitting to agents and publishers. I’ve been bitten by the picture book bug.
