About the Book
For over a thousand years dragons have existed in secret . . . Peter Clark can build a robot from scratch and pick a lock in two minutes or less. But he can’t figure out why his mother left or why his grandma refuses to talk about her. When Uncle Dominick shows up on Peter’s twelfth birthday with a letter that hints at answers and an incredible story about dragons, Peter follows him, determined to find out the truth about his mother’s disappearance. What he finds is a reality far different from what he ever could have imagined – where dragons live in hiding, hunted by poachers for their magical parts, and a small group of men and women work tirelessly to protect them. These are the Dragon Defenders. Peter’s uncle is one. So was his mother. Now it’s Peter’s turn.
* My Review *
Hi everyone, Paul here today and it’s been a while since I’ve read a book for review. I’ve been quite busy with work, writing, and school so I’ve been quite selective in my reading choices since there hasn’t been much time. I saw Dragon Defender by J.A. Blackburn and knew this book was for me. You’ve already read the summary so let’s get to my review.
What I liked most: The adventure. I grew up on Encyclopedia Brown and the Three Investigators, and I can tell you Dragon Defender is right up there with them. I was drawn in by the mystery and the adventure and couldn’t put the book down. There are so many twists and turns throughout that I’m certain young (and perhaps a bit older) readers will love this book
What missed a bit: I don’t want to write a spoiler here, but there was a scene showing the Council of Nine. I won’t go into detail, but I thought the judgement resembled that of King Solomon. This is perfectly fine, but I would have liked to have seen a reference to King Solomon, maybe by comparing the Council’s wisdom to that of the infamous King.
Overall: A great book! I loved everything about it. I loved the characters, the adventure, the dialogue, and the ending. The ending you say? Yes, because it leaves the door open for more stories, but concluded this one. I recommend this book to young readers, teachers, and librarians. Dragon Defender is a book to get even the most reluctant readers to read. I can’t wait for the next one.
